recommmend usenet reader

So my old combination of slrn and sn to read usenet news has failed. This combo tends to fail every six months or so. It fails in a completely different way each time.

I'm tired of dealing with this, so I want to switch to a JFWA[1] newsreader.

I tried thunderbird because it happens to already be on my distro. It does not connect to the server despite me giving it server, userid and password. So, In view of my JFWA requirement, can anyone recommend a newsreader please? High tech features (such as the ability to decode multipart binaries) are not required.

Thank you in advance.
