recomendation for simple midi synth program

Hi,
I got given an edirol pcr 30 usb midi keyboard. I plugged it in and it all lights up, but as a non musical type, can anyone recommend, if it exists, a simple plug and play soft ware that I can plug into and play the keyboard, so to speak to test it and see if it works....

especially if it is in an ubuntu friendly deb apt type thing.

cheers
in advance
daceo

Timidity is probably the best known free linux midi soft synthesiser. Most linux distros have it. I only ever used it to play .mid files, so I am not sure how to hook it up to a keyboard. Heaps of command line options, so should be something there.
