Question Receiving streaming audio in Linux

Greetings ...
I'm really new to linux ... running the latest Ubuntu ... and would like to be able to listen to streaming audio on this OS. The site I want to listen to points me to Real Media or Windows Media Player there .. but what do I use here?

If the stream is available in Windows media formats, install VLC. It's in the Ubuntu repos.

If the file format is a Real Audio format (*.rm, *.ram, and so on), real formats are among the most proprietary and encumbered in the media world. Real Player for Linux is no longer supported, but you can find legacy files here.

Unfortunately, they don't have *.deb files, just *.rpms and sources, so you would likely to install from sources on Ubuntu.

I would suggest downloading 10.0.0.9 *.bz2 file. I installed it onto Slackware just the other day and it works fine.

Ubuntu has a reference on compiling and installing software from sources:

I also listen to a lot of streaming media, with a particular fondness for Old Time Radio.

Edit: Installing from sources sounds a lot more complicated than it is.
