reboot problem in ubuntu 8.1


when i reboot my computer, it goes on well and loads Ubuntu but instead of it going to the login it doesn't. instead it begins checking the file system and then completely stops at

from there i have waited for hours and it keeps saying

i am using ubuntu 8.1, please i love that ubuntu version and it's why i haven't upgraded yet because i have tried the other versions and i didn't really like them. i have a 40GB HD and 512MB RAM, 1.8GHZ processor, i am using pentium 4.

i dont know what is the problem really, please assist me!

i have tried to check my hard disk and its all in good condition

may be i'll try to format it but how do i create a backup for my files yet i cannot get to the files?

You can use any live cd/dvd and back up your data to an external drive and reinstall. Then I would recommend you unmount the hard drive and run 'fsck /dev/<device name> and see if you are getting some errors. If you get any errors you can use 'fsck -r' which would help you correct any errors manually.
