RealVNC + X setup
 

Hi everyone, I have RedHat 9 running on a system with just basic X-Windows and Fluxbox. I had the system running to where I would log in on X-Windows, then start the RealVNCServer, then connect to it via my windows box. But I changed the order in which things worked, I now start the RealVNCServer via SSH, that way I do not need to have a monitor hooked up to the system.

After I changed this, the color depth of the RealVNC connection dropped dramatically. I have a feeling this is because I did not actually log in to X-Windows at all. Does someone know anything about this? Or know of a way I can set maybe a default color depth for X?

The depth-option might be you friend today.. :)

so I'm guessing the vnc options are (or at least can be) completely independant from your X setup?

Well I tried changing the color depth of 16, 24, and 32, and they all looked exactly the same! Well, 16 and 24 did, 32 would never load.

Any other ideas? :(

I only tried vnc once so I don't have a clue I'm afraid..

I am not too sure what happened, but last night, I started up a regular vncserver, just "vncserver" as a user, and the colors were back to my 8 bit! I opened up mozilla through fluxbox, minimised my vncviewer on my windows box, went back some time later, and the colors were back up to a usable 24-bit?!?!

I have no clue what is going on?? :) looks ok now though! Anyone know what might cause this?

Are you using VNC v4 beta? That version offers an option to reduce
color depth (to decrease used network bandwidth), even automatically.
This is sometimes behaving strangely, but well, it's a beta.

hmm, good point! i just checked my version, and its 3.3.7, but that doesnt necessarily mean thats not the cause.

I'm confused as to why it would change the color depth in the middle of the session still. That just doesnt make sense, that seems like it would be something that would happen at the time in which either the client or the server were started.
