Realplayer will not connect

I installed Mandrake 9.2 this weekend and I cannot get Realplayer to work. It gives me an error that says I'm not connected to the internet. I've tried to auto configure the transport and it too thinks I am not connected to the internet. I turned off the firewall and lowered the security to poor to see if that helped. Does anyone else have this problem? Nobody seems to be asking this question. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I know that very recently the windows version of realplayer was substantially updated... I have no direct experience of this myself as I dont use it, but maybe your problem could be connected with this. have you checked the realplayer.com website to see that you are using the latest software? They may even say if there are any current difficulties in supporting linux???

Realplayer won't connect

I went to the site and they suggested everything I've tried. I even tested some of the clips they have and they all didn't work. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks

Its got to be a problem with your installation then.. I suggest take the RPM ? out of your system & download / re-install another copy of it...

Ive tried that. Do you know of any extensions I should search for and delete? sometimes setup files are left behind.

neilcpp 01-26-2004 07:42 PM

Ok so I assume you installed a tarball rather than RPM?

You can only clean your system manually from a tar.gz install by hand deleting the files in question. If you look at the documentation, you should be able to find out exactly where the files are located...

However, when you install again, it should overwite existing directories & files anyway. Try searching for RPM installs rather than tarballs - its a lot easier to clean up if something goes wrong.

Ultimately, as a last resort, try setting up a new user account and installing a new realplayer for that user. I know this is not ideal, but it might be the best way until you get things figured out in your regular user account...

Actually, I installed it with the rpm I haven't figured out the tarballz. I couldn't find the extensions mentioned in the post you gave me. Maybe i should try the tarball - is there a program that installs them like rpms?

neilcpp 01-27-2004 10:27 AM

I would suggest that you download a realplayer RPM from a trusted website, ensuring that it has correct signatures etc.

You are more likely to sort this problem out by installing a new RPM - the original one was probably corrupted in some way.

If you try to install it as a tarball & something goes wrong, it will be harder for you to take it out of your system.

Hey, i found this posting http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...r+rpm+download It outlines how to install the realplayer but I don't understand the part about changing the directory - change it to what? Any help is much appreciated.

Hi - as it happens, i have now decided to try out realplayer to! I have visited their web page and selected to download the realplayer for linux program. I also found this link. it is a forum for linux users with realplayer questions/ problems

http://realforum.real.com/cgi.bin/un.../wwwthreads.pl

I will post again when i install the program and let you know if i have similar prooblem to your.

Hi - i visited the realplayer site and followed the instructions for downloading a linux version:

1 - a realplayer which was suited to my machine. (did you select LINUX cf Windows!! & did you select the correct options for your machine??

2. I downloaded the file r1p1_linux22_libc6_i386_a1.bin. I followed the instructions on the web page for installing but got a 'segmentation fault' error several times. Instead i choose another version rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin & followed the install instructions on the web page. This installed without a problem.

3. I tested the player by visiting the realplayer radio tuner webpage & it works fine.

There is no need to 'register' with netscape - other than provide details of your email address where asked by the realplayer program.

I think that you may have downloaded a file that simply does not work. Try to download it again, making sure you select linux! & that you give correct details of your operating system - if mandrake is not there, redhat should be close enough to work on your system.

Failing that, there is a realplayer forum on the website - ive posted a link above,( but must have mistyped something).

good luck

At the moment I can only hear sound with my linux realplayer. I cant view video streams online as these need addiditonal plugins. I will try to fix this when i get time.

But when you do get your realplayer sound & video working an excellant way to test would be to visit www.deangoesnuts.com and download the 16MB video 'Dean Reloaded'... it is hillarious (though i had to view it under windows!!!).

(Howard Dean is a Democratic Party candidate who is running for the parties nomination to be president. He made a speech last week where he got carried away & people have put his words to music!!)

Also look at the video of Microsoft's CEO Steve??

You can get the Realplayer video codecs here http://realforum.real.com/cgi-bin/un...collapsed&sb=5 instuctions about which ones to copy are in the tarball.
