Realplayer w/Red Hat 9.0

Is anyone using this? I get seg faults when trying to run, so I'm curious if anyone else has had success.

Ah yes the crashing realplayer.

It's a real nuisance since the problem is not obvious.

If you had done a Google search then you would have found the answer on how to solve the problem, as I had to do.

It is all due to, if I rememeber correctly, the threading model in the kernel
changing from when your installed realplayer version was built and the new
code being introduced into the kernel.

Go to

http://forms.real.com/real/player/un...1choice_c1_2_2

and click on the link

-------------------------------------------
4)
Get your free RealVideo 9 codec upgrade package
-------------------------------------------

Unpack the tar.gz archive file and install the appropriate share library
files .so.* for your installation RealPlayer8 or OnePlayer as per the
instructions in the README/INSTALL file.

And not only will your realplayer fire up without crashing, you will
be able to play the superb new RealPlay9 format rm files as well.

Have a look for the location of some of these on the realplayer site.

I am using those versions of Realplayer, and it seg faults.
The problem, as noted in this link has something to do with the kernel.

I used:

export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1
and everything is peachy, except for the plugin.

XMMS and Mplayer dont play real files do they?

I prefer to have as many options as possible at my fingertips. I have xmms, mplayer, realplayer, and others. Having a big hard drive rules. There is no one true media player I have found. More like good collections of medai players..

Elam : sorry if the above did not work.

Simple solution -- get the rebuilt working rpm from

http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3?idpl....i386.rpm.html

You can still add the Realplayer9 format if necessary from the download from the real.com site.

New RPM works

Thanks for the pointer--I just got RH9 working on my dual-boot dual-monitor machine and was having the segment faulting RP8 problem as well.

FreedomFighter :

Thank you for confirming that my recommendation does in fact work :+)

When I first upgraded to Red Hat 9 and I was getting the segfault with RealPlayer, I had to do a bit of hunting on the web (with Google) to find the cause and to find the cure.
