RealPlayer Issue
I have always used Totem for playing rm files. It plays them fine, but when playing the streaming video it locks the scan bar, so if you want to rewind the movie you have to start it completely over. This has never really been in issue before, but now I've been having to watch 50 minutes rm videos for one of my classes at school. And it sucks having to restart the whole thing because you missed in the movie.
So I decided to try RealPlayer10, which allows you to scan around the movie, but for some reason it plays horribly. The audio plays fine, but the movie probably only plays at a few frames per second and the program becomes EXTREMELY unresponsive while playing the movie. I've tried playing around with all the settings with no luck. I've tried installing from the RPM and from the executable bin from the realplayer site, both play equally bad. I also tried using mplayer, but I have not had any luck getting it to play rm files.
If anyone knows a way to get RealPlayer to play video smooth or knows of a program that will both play and allow you to rewind a streaming rm file please let me know. I am running Mandriva 10.2 and am also fairly new to linux.
John

I actually had already tried installing a few of the older RealPlayer10 versions, but they still did the same thing. And looking around the helixplayer forum I only found one topic about the issue, but there was no solution posted for it.

Does this happen with all realplayer files. I have found that some work ok and others just can't be rewound or fast forwarded. This occurs when using Totem as well, so I am not sure if its a problem with the files.

I tried playing a few other rm files and they all behave the same way. They play great in totem, but lock the scanbar. And they all play terrible in RealPlayer. Were the rm files that allowed you to rewind streaming media, or was the whole file saved to your hard drive? Also I tested out the files in my windows partition, and RealPlayer allows them to be rewinded there, so I don't think it could be anything set in the file.

Well I actually decided to try out a new distribution, Ubuntu, and I'm having the same issues with Realplayer in this distro. So obviously the problem wasn't with my setup, it has to be with realplayer itself. But anyway I give up on it.
