Realplayer bug

I am using Fedora Core v1. I was able to DL and install RealPlayer8. It showed up in my /usr/lib directory just fine. I found the rv9 new codecs and installed that (however, one of the files that the README said to replace didn't exist - a similar one did). Specifically, it said to replace rv.so.4.0.; however the closest name was rv.so.40.0. That might be what was meant, but I'm not skilled enough to second-guess like that.

Anyway, I DID get Realplayer to work in SUSE using Mozilla Firefox last week. However, I like Fedora for other reasons so I 'm keeping that.

Anyway, whenever I click on a streaming audio or streaming video link in Mozilla, I just get the Download Manager. It shows that it's trying to DL some files, but never gets past that point. I can wait for ten minutes, and then I just close the DL box.

Any ideas?

Did you copy the rpnp.so file from the RealPlayer8 directory to the plugins directory of your browser? You have to have that file in your browser's plugin folder. Plus this site here http://linux.bryanconsulting.com/stories/storyReader$21 has great info on how to add the realplayer mimetypes to your browser's configuration.

I had much the same problem with RP8 under RH9 - I ended up downloading the Real PLayer 9 rpm from http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/ which worked reasonably well. I'm now using it with FC1 - oddly it seems to be more reliable under Fedora:confused: .
Hope this is useful - Kev P.

Mozilla Firefox has an extension that you can download and install from their site that will allow you edit your mimetypes.

Good!

I got Xine to work, sort of. It would lock up after every clip, and I'd have to kill it from the command line. This version is stable. Thanks! Now at least I can watch movies on my local system. Realplayer is next.
