RealMedia and .WMV codecs in MPlayer?

I installed MPlayer today after downloading all the relevent codecs from MPlayer's website and copying them into /usr/local/lib/codecs, and all seems to work fine except the RealMedia and wmv codecs. I'm unable to play .rm and some (though there are a few that work perfetly) .wmv files. Anyone have a suggestion?

read what mplayer says after u try to play one of the offending files, itll complain that a certain codec isnt where its supposed to be, find the offending codec and put it where mplayer is looking usually works.

With .rm files, the message reads "Cannot find codec matching selected -vo and video format 0x30335652". I have no idea what this means. For misbehaving .wmv files, it says "ERROR: Could not open required DirectShow codec wmvdmod.dll" but when I search for said file, it is found in /usr/local/lib/codecs right where it should be. I've tried changing the permissions for the file to rwxrwxrwx, but that didn't help.

read all the back right from when u started mplayer to play the file, itll give a few locations for where it tried to load the codec, your not reading back far enough or missing some of the error lines.

What exactly do you mean by "read all the back"? I was just passing on the error popups MPlayer displayed automatically. If there's an error log somewhere, what is it called? Because that would really help.

If you save the wmv file to desktop will the mplayer play the video then. I know I can on my system. Try that to see if it is actually mplayer causing the problem. I am still trying to get any browser to play wmv files directly. All I get is a text file on the screen. Have not tried realplayer files yet. mplayerplug-in.so does not help yet either with wmv files. Will let you know if I find a solution.

Copying to the desktop has no effect. Incidently, some .wmv are recognized by Konqueror as files played by MPlayer by default, while .wmv's have no file association at all, meaning Mandrake pops up a list of all the programs in the K-menu and I have to select MPlayer (or any other video program) from the list to play the file.

oh are u using the GUI version, i just use the console version all the errors and output just get sent to the console that way and when i had that problem with .wmv files it said something about trying to load a codec from somewhere, it was a codec i had just in the wrong place. moved the codec and it worked fine.

Ah. Well, does anyone know if the GUI version has an error log somewhere?
