Real Player Gold archive

Hi,

I have recently installed Real Player 10 Gold primarily to enjoy internet radio. What baffled my was the .bin extension the archive had. While .tar.bz, .tar.bz2, .deb, .rpm are pretty common in Tux world a .bin archive is something new to me.

Can anyone throw some light on .bin archive that real player uses?

It's a binary executable file. Just make it executable with chmod +x <filename>.bin.

The chmod command changes the permissions on a file one of which is the executable permission which allows a file to be run as a program.

If you don't like using the command line, you can change the permissions on a file using several popular file managers.

You can usually right-click on a file and select properties, and then go to the Permissions tab in the dialog which appears. There is a checkbox to make a file executable or not. I checked nautilus (the gnome file manager), dolphin and konqueror (KDE file managers) and the process is the same in all of them. I expect something similar is possible using other similar programs.
