Real Player for BBC .RAM files (world service) for Firefox on Suse 64 bit?
Hi,
I have installed the Real Player 11 Gold for Linux on Suse 11.1/64 bit: godzilla2:/home/brianp/download/realplayer # rpm -ivh RealPlayer11GOLD.rpm Preparing... ########################################### [100%] 1:RealPlayer ########################################### [100%] I already had the nspluginwrapper: From YAST: nspluginwrapper - Compatibility Layer for Netscape 4 Plug-Ins nspluginwrapper is an Open Source compatibility plugin for Netscape 4 (NPAPI) plugins. It enables you to use plugins on platforms they were not built for. For example, you can use the plugins compiled for i386 in Mozilla on Linux/x86_64 or other architectures. This package consists of: npviewer: the plug-in viewer npwrapper.so: the browser-side plug-in nspluginwrapper: a tool to manage plug-ins installation and update The level of support is unspecified I seem to have an np wrapper on it: godzilla2:/home/brianp # locate npwrapper.nphelix.so /usr/lib64/browser-plugins/npwrapper.nphelix.so I have the latest Firefox. From the help: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009012700 SUSE/3.0.6-0.1.2 Firefox/3.0.6 When I go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/ and hit the "Listen Live" link, I get a small popup pointing to this URL: http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/o...bcws=2&size=au Looking at the page source, there is an href: href="/mediaselector/check/worldservice/meta/tx/live_infent?size=au&bgc=003399&lang=en-ws&nbram=1&nbwm=1" title="Listen to the BBC World Service Live"><span>*</span>Listen Live</a> It contains this error message: We are sorry but you don't appear to have any compatible media plugins. Below the error message are 3 icons that look small pieces of film. When I click on any of them, a tiny RealPlayer 11 pops up. The status message says "Buffering 0% - Start-up" and it never gets any farther. Hitting the stop and start buttons does nothing. Does anybody in Linuxland listen to the BBC? How do you do it? Thank you, BrianP |
BBC is phasing out their older realplayer method of listening. They are now using the famous/notorious iplayer for their audio/video stuff. For listening you need to have the flashplayer plugin installed.

Be aware that some BBC content is not streamed to locations outside the UK.

Hi,
I went to firefox -> edit -> preferences -> applications. There is no "content type" of RAM. There appears to be no way to add a new content type. I see a web feed and the action is "preview in firefox". The other options on the drop down menu are bloglines, my yahoo and google. I have no idea what this means. I see no means of associating flash with RAM content. Under firefox -> tools, I see mediaPlayerConnectivity. Under mediaPlayerConnectivity, I see configure. I changed the "real media" application from /usr/bin/realplayer to /usr/bin/flashplayer. Now when I click on "listen live" (bbc world service), I get 5 popup windows: 1) Real player error: General error: HXR_SOCK_CONNREFUSED (0x80040620) (pnm://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/support/redirect.ra). Kill it. 2) a tiny real player, stopped. All buttons including play, stop, file, view, tools, ... are dead. Kill it. Can't kill it. 3)X <2>: Folder contents could not be displayed. Error stating file '/home/brianp/Documents/http:/www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/ondemand/worldservice/meta/tx/live_infent?bgc=003399&lang=en-ws&nbram=1&nbwm=1&ms3=54&ms_javascript=true&bbcws=2&size=au': No such file or directory. Kill it. 4) same as 3. Kill it. 5) Small firefox window with URL: http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/c...nbram=1&nbwm=1. The preferences button shows real player is selected. "Launch this in standalone player" brings up a black box which says, Media link(s) found in 'live infent_au_nb.asx" There is a link "+ www15.asx http://www.bbc.co.uk/.../www15.asx" The bottom of the window says "click link to play it". Clicking does nothing. What is this mediaPlayerConnectivity? I installed Firefox from the Suse 11.1 install DVD and then YAST updated it to the latest. This whole setup appears to be catastrophically over-misengineered, or am I just too stupid to figure it out? What am I doing wrong? Thank you, BrianP |
Deleted MediaPlayerConnectivity. Now no plugin can be found?
Hi,
I don't know what mediaPlayerConnectivity is or how it got there so I nuked it. Good riddance. Now, when I hit "listen live" (bbc world service), I get a small firefox window that says "click here to download plugin". Clicking sends me to the plugin finder service: No suitable plugins were found. Unknown plugin (video/x-ms-asf). There is a link "for more information on plugins" which sends me to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:7 It has adobe reader, flash player, java, quicktime, realplayer, shockwave and windoz media player. I am also geting a weird error on on of my command shells: WARNING: environment variable G_FILENAME_ENCODING set and it is not UTF-8 Connection failure: Connection refused [1]+ Done /usr/bin/flashplayer brianp@linux-wbgu:~/.thunderbird/umdv18jk.default/Mail$ env | grep G_FILENAME_ENCODING G_FILENAME_ENCODING=@locale,UTF-8,ISO-8859-15,CP1252 I have no idea where this came from. It looks like some kind of internationalization. Adding "export G_FILENAME_ENCODING=UTF-8" to my .bashrc file: brianp@linux-wbgu:~/.thunderbird/umdv18jk.default/Mail$ env | grep G_FILENAME_ENCODING G_FILENAME_ENCODING=UTF-8 Didn't fix anything. What is going on here? BrianP |
