Real Player and onboard ac97 audio

I have installed realplayer on multiple distros, (currently gentoo) and it never seems to work.
It's usually one of two problems, realplayer won't connect to the network location for audio streams.
Two, the sound card is deemed busy or unavailable.
Realplayer asks you to specifiy a port to connect to audio streams. I've tried to set a port, but realplayer won't connect I'm very interested in resolving this so I can ditch windows. Thanks.

If the sound card is busy, try killing esd and/or artsd.

already tried disabling arts.

After some careful configuration, and upgrading my sound drivers to alsa, real audio now works flawlessly.
