readable multipart archive files?

I am looking for a 'tar' like solution that creates readable split files.

I am currently using tar -cz and then 'split -b 1G' for archiving. My level-0 backup is over 100GB, so I end up with about 100+ pieces. Then I upload them all to Amazon-S3 for glacier archive. The problem is, except the first piece, none of the other split pieces are readable. If I want to recover just one file, I have to download all 100+ pieces and recreate the entire archive. Also, if one piece gets corrupted, then the whole archive goes bad. This seems like a huge weak point. I would feel much better if the individual pieces are readable, with its own content directory, so I can just download only the piece I need. I looked at 'dar', but it says the slices are not readable.

Is there any way around this problem?

I think you need several independent archives with a common directory listing.
