I'm new to Linux and I'd just like to know if RAR files can be extracted out of the box or will I need to get the Linux version of WinRAR? I would like to see more GUI applications, command lines or just typing in the kernal seems too tedious for my everyday tasks...

Did not say which distro, version, and gui using?
To get rar files and the easiest is install unrar which is command line. Then install fileroller which is a gui for extraction.
Some distros also install the KDE archiver (ark or something like that). Either way once you install the unrar package you will be able to open RAR files using whichever GUI program was installed by default. There's no command line stuff required.
I don't really know much about linspire but I'm sure they have packages for stuff like unrar in their repos. If not maybe you can use one of the Debian apt repositories.
