random udev hangs

I'm running an Athlon XP 3200+, 1Gb RAM, onboard sound, rad 9600XT 256Mb (ATI drivers refuse to work damnit. but thats another story). I have fedora core 3 installed, with a custom 2.6.8.1 kernel - mainly to get ntfs support. FC3 uses udev, and recently i have had some problems with it. When booting it sometimes decides that it will hang, other times it works perfectly. I have changed nothing in between - i just hit the power when it hangs and try again. sometimes it works first time, other times it can take up to 8 tries.. It is starting to really annoy me. I wondered if anyone has any ideas what could cause this random behavior? I don't know much about udev, so patronize me lol.

dmesg output:
