I'm currently on Windows 7 and I'd like to install Fedora 22 x64 in dual boot. It's not the first time I intall a Linux distro so I'm not a newbie.
Sometimes, when running on live USB, Fedora freezes for no apparent reason. Even mouse is freezed, and "Ctrl + Alt + F1" does nothing.
I have the same problem with Ubuntu x64 live USB, but mouse doesn't freeze.
I checked the integrity of Fedora's ISO, not ubuntu because I can't find where I downloaded that iso anymore, but it doesn't matter.
When I installed Fedora, I also had a freeze while updating everything, so I had to hardware reboot and now my dsitro is completely messed up, failed to recover it.
So I'd like to know : why does it freeze ???
Or more useful : what can I do to know what is happening ?
Or even more useful : regardless of the problem, how can I just have a working linux distro without getting crazy about how to install it ?
I tried an other versions (ubuntu 32-bits) and it works fine.
I just want to install Fedora, it's been days I'm trying to understand what's happening and I'm tired of this. For me, installation problems are the biggest flaw for Linux since it happens "often" for various reasons.
Please watch the language, in part because there are folks from all age groups who visit this forum, including those under 18.
I'm not sure I can help you solve this issue but I have the impression that it's only with the 64 bit versions of Linux that you experience the freezing. Is this accurate?
What is your the brand and model (and model number) of your system? Also, if you can, please open a terminal and post the results of...
Code:
lspci -nnk
Code:
lsmod
Code:
dmesg
This should give folks a better idea of what's going on.
I only tested with Ubuntu x32 and GParted [debian] x32;
There isn't really a "test" since it can crash seconds after end of start-up as well as it can crash 10 minutes later, making it difficult to see whether a distro is ok or not.
Nice observation though
My goal is to have a working linux distro (preferrably x64 Fedora KDE), understanding the problem is secondary even if I'd like too since it's not the first one I encountered.

I wouldn't dimiss this idea yet. Run these and other 32 bit distributions for a while, if you can, and see what the results are. This may be something that should be reported as a bug.
Also, as another idea, run Ubuntu or Fedora x64 until it crashes and then when you reboot, copy and post the information in "/var/log/syslog." It might give a clue as to what is going on.
Thank you for posting the information I requested in my last post.
Regards...

Reason: Added information.
since it happens across distros (and presumably not on windows?) my suspicions are on nouveau.
try to disable it temporarily by doing everything up to 7) in this post. most probably you won't be able to use native resolution, but does it fix the freeze?
if so, you should install the proprietary nvidia driver.
your $DISTRO's community should have instructions on how to do that.
I apologize for the late answer. Since I installed once again another distribution (Linux Mint), I waited for the crash to occur before posting here.
Since I installed the nvidia proprietary driver, I had crashes again but they are not random, they occur sometime at startup, and always when restoring from hibernate.
So switching from nouveau to nvidia driver did resolve my initial problem, even though it's difficult to install a new graphic driver when on Live USB. And even if I try to do this, the system can freeze before finishing the installation of the new driver or the distribution.
So I don't know what to do : should I create a new thread or not ?
I also have about ten other bugs (I know I'm very unlucky...) so should I make a new thread for each one of those ?
If the bugs are related, put them together in a thread. Try to think of someone who will try to solve their own problem using your thread. If you make a new thread, link this one to it.
