RAID Question

Hello all,

I am curious, I have a box running RHEL 3.0 with one 160 gig IDE drive. Normally, i know to set up RAID, you need to do so before installing software.

My question is, now that I have the system already installed, can I buy another 160 Gig drive, plug it in and configure the system as RAID or do I have to reinstall all over.

It may be a dumb question but I am curious, so please dont kill me for asking.

Thanks.

It's not a dumb question.

You can indeed add a RAID 1 mirror now.

You have to backup the data and make the RAID array to use two drives because it will trash all data on the 160 GB hard drive. Though I suggest using RAID level 1 not RAID level 0 because it is better for OS and for serving people when using IDE or SATA devices.

Backing up data is never a bad idea, but the switch to software mirroring (RAID 1) can be done without destroying data.
