Radeon HD5450 and Kde 3D HW rendering


Hi all,

i am having big trouble to have working the HW 3D acceleration. First of all i have 2 simple questions:

1) Is there anyone that have successfully working this card, with 3D HW accel (OpenGL) on KDE, using opensource drivers (radeon + libgl1-mesa-dri)?

2) Or better, is this board fully supported for 3D HW acceleration ?

Actually, only software rendering and XRender are working for me, with a really poor performance in kde.

I am really blocked now, i read many and many thread on the net about this, tried many solutions but none worked. My last chance could be to switch to the ATI propertary drivers, but i wouldn't.

I think, but I'm not positive, that for the 5000 series you HAVE to use fglrx. The reason for this, if I'm right, is because the driver code for the 5000 series has not been open sourced yet (normally there is some delay between the release of the card and the release of the open source driver).

Actually, 3D is supported in the open source driver for HD5xxx GPUs. You just need a much newer version of Mesa and xf86-video-ati than the one the OP is using. I'm not sure the what the minimum version of Mesa is, but I'd recommend 7.10 with xf86-video-ati version 6.14.x. For HD5xxx and newer GPUs, the r600 gallium3D driver is needed, not just the standard mesa driver. With new enough versions, though, KDE desktop effects will work really well.

many thanks, your replies was really impressive and really of great experience/knowledge.

Mainly, i was thinking to be using a debian testing, my apt sources are squeeze. But squeeze from feb 2011 is become "stable" so probably don't have the latest lib/drivers.

I solved, and writing below the solution for next pepole that will google for it:

To have ATI Radeon HD5450 3D ACCELERATION in KDE WORKING with linux OpenSource drivers, without installing propertary ATI drivers, this is what i did:

1) Downloaded and expanded the following source packages
libdrm-2.4.24
Mesa-7.10
xf86-video-ati-6.14.0


2) compiled and installed the 3 packages, in the following order:
libdrm-2.4.24, Mesa-7.10 (with --enable-gallium-radeon) , xf86-video-ati-6.14.0
Note:
- Mesa-7.10 require libdrm-2.4.24, so libdrm must be installed first and his /include header files must be included for Mesa compiling.
- libdrm and mesa was installed in /usr/local/lib, so i copied in a second step to /usr/lib, if possible, correct prefix should be set with ./configure options


3) reboot, Xorg started perfectly and can use OpenGL acceleration:
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R600 (CEDAR 68F9) 20090101 x86/MMX/SSE2 TCL DRI2
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.10
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

Huh... You're not actually using gallium, but you do have 3D acceleration. I guess the requirement for gallium wasn't introduced till the HD6xxx series.

If you want to try the gallium3d driver, you actually need to build mesa with --enable-gallium-r600, not --enable-gallium-radeon :-)

let's say that i never play to any game, so probably i couldn't even appreciate Gallium3D but i can try it someday.
I see there are many layers for the graphics, radeon driver, dri, drm, mesa ... It is a very interesting argument, you think i can find some link that explain how they are connected together ?

As far as I know, at the present moment there's one or two plugins for KDE Desktop Effect that would work with the gallium3d driver that don't work with the standard mesa driver... Blur, for example, and I think invert.

I wonder what the indicator of working gallium is. I recompiled and reinstalled Mesa-7.10 with --enable-gallium-r600 flag enabled in Slackbuild, rebooted and glxinfo showed:

Building the gallium driver is not enough. You still have to install it. When the build is done, the driver ends up in mesa/lib/gallium/ instead of mesa/lib/ like the classic mesa driver.

Correct me if I'm wrong:
after using --enable-gallium-r600 flag, there should be r600_dri.so in mesa/lib/gallium folder, right?
