radeon 7500 Hardware acceleration support?

Hi, I have a computer set up with a radeon 7500 PCI edition using Slackware 10 and could not manage to get hardware acceleration working with my video card. I've read other posts from people trying to get their radeon 7500's working with hardware acceleration in linux and I am just wondering if there is support for the radeon 7500 in linux or not. So is there? Has anyone managed to get this card working with Direct rendering in linux?

ATI doesn't provide any form of support for Radeons below the 8500.

http://www.ati.com/developer/altoschart.pdf

Unless there's a separate project/driver out there to perform this function (I don't know of one) you might be out of luck.
They seem to be pointing you to each linux vendor for support/drivers for the older Radeon cards for X.org or XFree86.

I spent an ridiculous amount of time to get a 9700 Pro working correctly with SUSE 8.x and FC1. Never was very happy with it (in linux, anyway. Great drivers in XP), so I switched to an nVidia card, which uses a wonderful, if not proprietary, driver set for any flavor of linux you wish to try.

The official ATI support page on linux is here:

http://www.ati.com/support/faq/linux.html

Hope this helps. Good luck.

It's not a case of the distribution, it's down to the X server.

Is there support? Yes, with the open source 'radeon' provided with X.Org

'man radeon' for more information.

You may also need to enable DRI in your xorg.conf - man xorg.conf isn't very clear on this, as it refers you to another piece of docmentation elsewhere for this.

Woot! I got it working!

I am such a numbskull sometimes. I didn't even consider the fact that I have an onboard video chipset. So I $ Xorg -configure and then changed the driver for the onboard video to vesa instead of i810 that it was. And everything worked perfectly! Well except for the kernel 2.6.11 not working with any advanced frame buffers I choose. I had to choose normal. In case someone is wondering:

Slackware 10.1
kernel 2.6.11
Xorg version 6.8.2
Latest snapshot of my ATI radeon 7500 as of Feb 25, 2005 from http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots

Thanks for all the replies and Good luck!
