questions about 3D moddeling

hey, I'm poking around blender, but every time i render a object (in blender) it looks blocky, i set the material/texture(a image) buts its always blocky unless i set "shadeless" but then its sooo bright, can someone tell/point me to get something like this

http://www.glest.org/eng/index.htm (the wire frame to finished product picture) ... it goes from blocky, but when its texture is added, it looks normal ... can someone tell me how to get objects to look normal without using excessive amounts wires?

I assume you're referring to the fact that it looks faceted, with flat polygons and sharp corners. It sort of depends on what you're rendering - if your model is not very detailed (has few polygons) then it will look blocky when rendered. To tell Blender to smooth off the corners of your object, select the object and go into edit mode (TAB). Select all the vertices with the "A" key. Under the editing controls (F9), select the "Set smooth" button.

Sometimes you want the sharp corners in some places, but not in others. For example, if you model a soda can, you probably want the sides to be smooth, but the top to be flat. For that, you can use the "Auto smooth" button, and adjust the "Degr" (degree) setting to specify how large of an angle (between faces) you want to smooth.

If you're modelling something that should be very smooth all over (say, a person's face), you can use the "SubSurf" button to cause the whole model to be smoothed by adding more polygons. You can adjust how much you want the model to be subdivided (more subdivision makes the model more complicated and slower to render). This is especially good in combination with "Set smooth".

I hope this helps!
