question: why does fedora core reset certain permissions?

Hey, I recently installed and had to resolve a video driver issue with an nvidia card. After deleting some mesa files, I got direct render to work. But at first 3d would not work unless I was root. That sucks, so after some jiggery pokery I was able to chmod the /dev/nvidia* files to give all users 3d control. Then after a Unreal Tournament 2004 crash(surprise!) I discovered I had to reset those permissions every time I reboot. Sure I could have a script that does that for me, but I'd rather solve the problem then placate it every time I reboot. On this same line; I have to create a sym link for /dev/dvd to my DVD drive every time I boot to get dvd playback, why doesn't /dev/dvd symlink persist between boots? Why is the /dev/nvidia* permissions set to be root specific with every boot? What makes these changes not stay between sessions?

Simple answer, it's caused by udev in FC3, so devices are dynamicaly created. Look at /etc/udev/. There are some configuration files.

You can set permissions permanently by editing the correct section in /etc/udev/permissions.d/udev.permissions.
