Question about yum

I am trying to use yum to install some software that I have downloaded.

I have downloaded a file with a name which ends .rpm (I am running Fedora Core 4)

I then try
Code:
yum install <relative path to downloaded file>
and it chugs away for a while, and eventually it asks me if it is OK to download some number of K. I say "y" and it reports that the package file "is not signed". This is obviously an error - but what does it mean.

OK, it means that the file is not signed - but who should have signed it? should I have been trying to install by some other means? What?

Ian

It refers to a security signature, usually it's signed via GPG. basically, it means that you can be sure that you have the right version, not a broken or malicious one.

http://fedoranews.org/tchung/yum-gpg/ deals with installing the GPG key on Fedora Core 3. It should carry over to Core 4, if that's what you have. As does this: http://www.fedorafaq.org/#gpgsig

Hmm, if you're familar with terminal commands, why not just run
"rpm -i </path/**.rpm>" or "rpm -ivh" ?

I'm also running FC4 and when I click on an .rpm file for d/l a window pops and asks if I'd like to run the installer or save to disc. I tyically select "installer" and it takes off and installs the s/w.
I believe yum requires a source url to process the sigs etc. If the source info is not in yum.conf, it will have trouble processing the request.
Cheers
P.

Whilst this is a good question, doing this can land you in dependency hell. YUM does it automatically and is useful for that reason.

I was trying to use yum exactly because I was having dependency problems.

I tried to install something (I forget what now) and was told that I did not have all the dependencies. I was advised to install using yum because it kept track of what was installed on my machine.

Maybe I'll trying clicking on the install button and see what happens.

Thanks

Shouldn't there be some option you can set in yum.conf or something that tells it to ignore the signature stuff?

Post the exact errors that you got and the list of repositories you have configured.
