question about wine in general
 

it seems obvious to me that windows programs(games, normal apps, just stuff in gen.) would work a tad slower in linux using wine. but how much slower? i tried warcraft, and it comes to almost a complete stop. star craft is much better, but not that much better. i can manage to play a little bit, but it's unbareable, waaaaaaaaaaaay too choppy, and to think wc is much much worse than that. is there a way to configure wine so that these games, or mabe just windozes apps in gen work much more like normal? also, how can i make it so that my games' screens aren't extending past my screen so that i'm not looking at just a small portion of the game? thnx

The slowness could be a number of things. Big thing first, though: have you installed the close-source drivers for you graphics card? Also, try looking into WineX. It's a fork of WINE that is meant specifically for running Windows games. From my experience it works great and is definitely worth the money. If you would rather not pay, you can compile WineX from CVS, but without some features. As for the too large of screen, edit your WINE config; I don't remember exactly how but there is an option to adjust the screen size.

no, i haven't installed the drivers. what are they, what are they for, and how do i go about doing this?

i have tried winex, but it wasn't working on my laptop. i was bouncing between the 2 trying to get them to work, and i finaly found an easy fix for wine.

Downloading the drivers is easy, go here for Nvidia drivers and go here for ATI drivers. For drivers for other cards you'll have to google it, I guess. To install the drivers, exit X (search around LQ for how to do this on a Red Hat system) and run the file you downloaded as root. You'll probably have to edit your XFree86Config file (do another LQ search) and then restart X. Try running Warcraft again and see what happens.
