question about screen resolution

Greetings, i am new to using linux, i am running suse 9.1. my question is.. when i open a program, or any window, suse automatically places it so that part of the window outside my screen, and i have to move it down to see the top parts. i believe it has to do with suse thinking my screen is larger then it is. any suggestions appreciated.

I've never used Suse, but I know what your issue is. You're right. Suse is configured at the moment to treat your usable space as a "virtual" desktop space (kinda like being part of a big spreadsheet). I don't know what Suse's video configurator is (Part of Yast?), but if you find it, look for a setting that has "virtual desktop" enabled. What's going on is that your adaptor/monitor's maximum allowable space is larger than your chosen resolution, so you're playing on only part of the "screen". Some like it. Most don't.
