Question Question about location of Wine file...

Instructions below are to make Kazaa workable with wine...my question is where the /.wine/fake_windows/ directory is ..I'm assuming I have to make it, but wasn't sure since the instructions explicitly said to go into that directory so I figured maybe it was somewhere else on here that I wasn't looking. Thanks.

----
1. Install Wine and set it's version to Win98

2. Install K++ 2.10 by entering command "wine klitekpp210b3e.exe".

3. You need to get some Windows dll's to your Windows/System/ directory.
Enter the following commands:

cd ~/.wine/fake_windows/Windows/System
.
.
.
.bunch of other commands to enter below

The directory is created when you install wine.
In your home directory will be a hidden folder called ".wine".
In that folder is the fake windows directory.

Hope that helps.

These are the only files in my .wine directory....

------
[keerthan@ks .wine]$ ls -a
. .. cachedmetrics.:0.0 config system.reg userdef.reg user.reg win.ini
-------

However, when I installed i placed the "windows" directory in /home/keerthan/... here's the setup:

------
[keerthan@ks keerthan]$ cd windows
[keerthan@ks windows]$ ls -a
. .. c
[keerthan@ks windows]$ cd c
[keerthan@ks c]$ ls -a
. .. My Documents My Shared Folder Program Files windows
[keerthan@ks c]$ cd windows
[keerthan@ks windows]$ ls
Application Data Kazaa Lite regedit.exe
system winhlp32.exe
command Lite rundll32.exe system.ini win.ini
Desktop notepad.exe SendTo uninstall.exe
Fonts Profiles Start Menu winhelp.exe
[keerthan@ks windows]$ cd system
--------
I'm assuming the fake windows directory above is the one i need to move the .dll files into instead of the .wine directory...but let me know if I'm wrong on this. Thanks.

I've just installed wine, and to get it configured right I downloaded winetools to help create a fake c directory in .wine and create a config file. Then all I had to do was pass the winedefault.reg file from the wine package to regedit and I had a 'look ma no windows' fake directory. I got Counter-Strike to install, but alas it kills my x
However I hope this helps you getting wine set up. If you need any more info let me know.

My wine works with notepad ..and that's about the only thing I've gotten it to work with....right now I'm trying to install a p2p program...so kazaa lite would be good..but it keeps giving me errors...Went to the k-lite website and the instructions they gave me above was what I tried out.....but these are errors in the file:

Line 26: Unrecognized input '\"*\" = \"builtin, native, so\"'
Line 27: Unrecognized input '\"commctrl\" = \"native\"'
Line 28: Unrecognized input '\"shdoclc\" = \"native\"'
Line 29: Unrecognized input '\"shdocvw\" = \"native\"'
Line 30: Unrecognized input '\"shlwapi\" = \"native\"'
Line 31: Unrecognized input '\"comdlg32\" = \"native\"'
Line 32: Unrecognized input '\"ole32\" =\ "native\"'
Line 33: Unrecognized input '\"oleaut32\" = \"native\"'
Line 34: Unrecognized input '\"rpcrt4\" = \"native\"'

I thought that's what the website told me to do.....maybe I misunderstood or something.

I'm trying to install limewire as well but I'm getting java environment problems with that. But if you have already installed a p2p program that works...I'll take your advice on how to get it on here because I've been unsuccessful with several of the others(including WinMX). Thanks...really appreciate the reply.

Dr Ozz,

Thanks for the article....changed the stuff around accordingly. However, I'm getting this error when I type in "wine kpp.exe":

Could not stat /mnt/fd0 (No such file or directory), ignoring drive A:
Could not stat /cdrom (No such file or directory), ignoring drive D:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
x11drv: Can't open display: :0.0

Are there any drivers I may need to get the display to work?

I opened up a new terminal....i dont know if the last one gave those errors becasue I had switched to diff. users several times...so it may have not been on the path that it was supposed to be on? Not sure on that..just a guess. But here is what I'm getting now after typing in "wine kpp.exe"....kinda long so bear with me...

It asked me to debug....here's the stuff that the debugger did..and at the end it just ended...and nothing popped up...assuming that failed.

Another thing.....I still don't know why I'm doing this...I think it's an environment variable of some sort that I'm setting...but to get wine to even work....I have to type in this command:

export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5

What exactly is this doing? Thanks.
