That is pretty much right. The thing to remember is that the core OS is the same between all of the different distros (the Linux kernel is the same in Fedora as it is in Slackware). What is different is the software that comes packaged with the distro. For example, I believe Fedora can fill five or six CDs while Slackware really only needs two. The difference is the amount of software the distro chooses to include.
Now that said, Linux software is Linux software. By downloading software from the network, a Slackware install can have exactly the same capablilites as a Fedora install.
