Question about aterm and vim

Hi guys,

I am using fluxbox on slackware(at work) and sidux (at home). I am using aterm as my primary terminal emulator.

When I edit something in vim using aterm and after that quit from vim, I still have the vim output on my ater screen. This doesn't happen in xterm, eterm or konsole on the same pcs.

Any idea ?

thanks and regards,
Hardik

You might need to install a termcap entry for aterm, and set $TERM.

I can't speak about aterm, but I can speak about xterm. The situation with xterm is not always as you describe. If you invoke xterm the usual way, and then in that new window enter this command:

Code:
echo $TERM
you'll get xterm as a response. If you use vim, elvis, or a similar editor and then quit, the screen gets restored to roughly the way it was before you invoked the editor.

But if you invoke xterm with the tn option, thus:

Code:
xterm -tn vt100 &
xterm -tn linux &
then you'll notice that the TERM environment variable matches what you specified on the command line, and you'll also notice that most of the final screen of editing stays on the screen after you leave the editor.

I don't have access to aterm, but if you do, read its man page, and you may get similar info.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies.

I have set the .Xdefaults file for invoking aterm where I have a line ..

Code:
aterm*termName:xterm
and also in both xterm and aterm the $TERM variable is set to xterm.

@dive:
what is a termcap entry and how can I install it ?

regards,
Hardik

You will need look at aterm website or ask on forum if they have termcap settings.

The problem you have is probably caused by the fact that you have $TERM set to xterm and not aterm. But setting it to aterm will do nothing without the correct termcap entry.

According to the afterstep website aterm is based on rxvt code so you may want to try making $TERM=rxvt first.

Thumbs up

thanks, dive.

This worked. I changed it from xterm to rxvt and it worked. Additionally, I had to edit my .bashrc because it sets prompt (PS1) according to the terminal name.

Hardik

Hi,

Now I have another problem. ctrl+l doesn't clear the screen anymore. If I type clear it works but ctrl+l doesn't.

What should be changed to make it work ?

thanks & regards,
Hardik
