monitoring for upgrades without package managment tool
I compile most (if not all) of the software that I use and I was wondering, is there anything that can tell me of new versions of the source tarballs that could be scheduled as a cronjob?
EDIT1: sorry about the crappy subject header.

please try to use a useful thread title on your posts. this is "linuxquestions.org" i think you can take the fact that you're asking a question as a given.
If the project's on Sourceforge, then new versions are usually announced on Freshmeat.
There's an xml you can download which contains the latest version number in a <latest_release_version> tag on the project page.
I'd imagine you could easily parse this xml file to tell if the version has changed. It'd involve a bit of setup though.
