Quake and Quake 3

I copied Quake and Quake 3 over to my Debian 3.1 laptop that has a Radeon 7500 with DRI and integrated Intel audio. When I play Quake 1 with the high resolution PNG and JPEG textures, sound doesn't work. Quake 3 has no sound at all. Am I missing some files or something? How do I get Quake and Quake 3 working? They were copied from Yoper 2.1.

Well, does sound work otherwise on your machine? ALSA or OSS?

Hrrm, if it was ALSA, I would've advised ALSA-OSS emulation. Are any errors reported?

OK, FuhQuake says /dev/dsp broken pipe. I think it's trying to use OSS, can I force it to use ALSA?

I ran make menuconfig and loaded the OSS stuff for ALSA but still no sound. It still says /dev/dsp: Broken pipe. /dev/dsp is a link to /dev/dsp0 if that matters...
