Quake 3 freeze problem...

Hi all!

Quick questions concerning quake3 on my rh9 install...

I have rh9 running fine with little to no problems at all. Though, I am using a turtle beach soundcard, and arts does not like it at ALL.

Quake 3 installation went smoothly, and after upgrading to 1.32b, I can now use my mouse again. My problem is that occasionally when I am joining a server, I need punkbuster running. But turning on pb from the console will sometimes lock my machine up completely. Its kind of a hit and miss thing. Sometimes there will be no problem, other times I have to do a hard reboot to get back into my box. any thoughts?

Also! I ran into another problem the other night where I was able to join a server with no problem, and I can play with no problems, but after about 5 minutes of playing, i got a complete lockup again. It was strange, since everything was moving along nice and smoothly with little or no problems right up to the lockup. I don't know what the problem might have been, but I would love to hunt down what went wrong. any thoughts on what it might have been? Or, any help with a way for me to find out what happened after the fact? my system logs don't show anything amiss... is there a way to log what is happening to help me troubleshoot the problem?

TIA for all the help everyone! I reiterate someone else's point on a different thread, that if it weren't for these forums, I might still be stuck on windows.

lovin this linux

As for your second problem (the playing for 5 min then lockup), was there repeating sound in the background? If so, sounds just about like a video card overheat. What res/modes do you play at, and what's your video card?

hi! thanks for the reply. actually, there was no sound at all after the lockup, but i am checking now, and it appears that the fan on my card has crapped out on me (geforce2 pro, leadtek). so it looks like i will be looking for a new fan. i guess the gpu overheated and decided it didnt like being that way. i'll change out the fan and see what happens...

Happens quite often to myself and people I know (hey, we like OC'ing everything from video cards to the toaster ;)). It's a simple solution (keep it cooler), but not always a quick fix. While you're at it, you may want to get a new HSF combo for the card, something with a bit more umf than the stock cooling they put on there (I had a GF2 Pro for awhile as well). If you want to go a little nuts, look into ramsinks ;)
