Quake 3 Config Files

Ok, I have a fully functional quake3, point release 1.32 installed.

However, the default config file of q3config.cfg is not being written to /baseq3 for me to edit. I also cannot perform /writeconfig foo.cfg in game either. I chmod'ed the quake3 folder to have recursive write permissions for all users but this didn't solve the problem. Any ideas?
