I inherited a mail server at work and was left with very little in the way of documentation. I have extensive experience with linux at home, but little as a server admin.

Our mail server was working fine for over a year until last week our mail clients (thunderbird) suddenly could not connect to the server.

They were configured to use imap/ssl and had no problems before.
Now connecting yields a generic "connection was refused error".

I've checked the port with portqry.exe from my windows box and get a "TCP port 993 (imaps service): NOT LISTENING" message.

I've looked at the iptables rules and there doesn't appear to be any firewall rules blocking that port.

I'm not quite clear on how qmail interacts with imap, but I noticed that bincimap is installed on the server. Perhaps this is misconfigured or not running correctly?

Any advice that could be provided would be greatly appreciated. I really don't know what to check from here.

Check for alternate IMAP server. courier/vpopmail are popular with qmail
check log size. failure to rotate logs can cause issues
