qestion about h264 to mp4

I didn't find a forum related to multimedia so here goes-

I want to make a nice mkv files with mpeg4 (or is that mp4?) video, and good sound. I am green when it coems to the world of video. I may have missed or do not know about certain options or 'gatchas'

So far I've played with mencoder/acidrip.
-Prity good interface. It's 'x264' codec proces good vieo-but sound is way out of sync. This happens both with and with -nosound. I wasn't en

FFMPEG ??? My little baby is working on it.

What tool(s) might I have missed? Do other people do something similar? The goal for using plane vinila MP4 video in a mkv container.

I already have Mp4box and mp4creator.

I am on suse oss 10.0
PS Their may be more than one post here. For some reason the linux question post a newthready tool had---isues. I appologize in advance.
