qcad question
 

Hi. I'm a amatur cad user. When I had MS Windows installed I just loved Auto Cad 2006. Now I scraped MS Windows, so I'm trying to use QCad. It works fine, but theres one ability I can't locate in QCad. The nice feature that makes you plot in the length of the line, or the radius of the sircle.

How to I do this In QCad.

Auto Cad 2006 dont run in MS Windows 98, so it dont run in Wine. Which AutoCad verison Is the newest of the ones that support MS Windows 98???

What do you mean by "plot in"?

Writing the dimension on screen during drawing?
Put the dimension line after the subject is drawn?
Draw the diimension line on paper?

I'm sorry if my question was not spesific enough. I'n AutoCad when you are going to make a line, you can just point the line in the direction you want, and then type in the 'mini console' the length that you want. Then AutoCad makes the line as long as you type in, and in the direction you pointed...

I think I understand, but my handicap is that I don't know AutoCAD.

I think what comes the closest in QCAD is the "line with one point and give angle"

(Line menu, Line with given angle). You specify whether where you put the first point is going to be the end, start or middle point of the line, the lenght and the angle.

Alternatively, you could draw a line thru two points, and then trim or extend it afterwards. But that is only by a relative dimension, I don think it can be done specifying an absolute lenght.

Did you already try to post this (or other questions) in the QCAD user group? They are on Yahoo in Groups. Usually the group is very responsive to this kind of questions.

Qcad does not have the option to input line lenth on the fly as your refering... It is one of the many great features of ACAD and that is why I use it... QCad is OK for very basic drawings but don't even try to compare the features found in AutoCad...

You may want to look into VariCad or Bricscad's Intellicad which have (so called) linux versions but don't think you will get any kind of performance as you would with ACAD, especially 2006... I say if you have that version you paid a pretty penny for it so It's probably better for you to just duel boot...
