q3demo with ATI Rage128 Pro Ultra TF

Anyone know how to get this to work? Or possibly with any ATI card, if this seems to be an ATI problem? The game runs more smoothly on my 200mhz computer with a 16MB TNT2 than it does on my 1.7ghz with a 16MB ATi Rage128 Pro Ultra TF. I just successfully (I think, I now don't have OpenGL screensavers crashing X) installed drivers from dri.sourceforge.net for the video card, but the game is sooo choppy, even the menu lags by over 1 second with its choppyness. If you need any logs or anything, I'll post them, just please, people, try to help me out...?
