python errors

When I type 'python' from the command line, I am getting the following error, and information :

Code:
Could not find platform independent libraries <prefix>
Consider setting $PYTHONHOME to <prefix>[:<exec_prefix>]
'import site' failed; use -v for traceback
Python 2.3 (#2, Aug 31 2003, 17:27:29)
[GCC 3.3.1 (Mandrake Linux 9.2 3.3.1-1mdk)] on linux2
How do I set my pythonhome enviroment variable, and where should I set it to? I am using fedora core 1, I havnt a clue why it says mandrake linux in the python message...

many thanks in advance.

Could you have installed python from some non-Red Hat source or package, which is conflicting with a pre-existing RH python config? If that's the case there is probably more to fix than the environment variable.
