pulseaudio very quiet

I have just installed Linux Mint 6 on my parents PC.They did have PCLinuxOS previously but hadnt been updating it.Anyway Mint suits them totally and the fact that an "updates available" icon is right on the desktop Im hoping that they will now keep their system updated. The problem that we are having is that the sound from the system is much lower than with PCLinux.I looked to make sure that the volume was turned up and even when at 100% it is still very quiet. If for example the speaker volume was at 10 on PCLinux and was nice and loud, the speakers now have to be turned up to 60% to have the same volume.Im sure this is a pulseaudio problem as Alsa on any other Distros works fine.Any suggestions on how to fix this.I dont want to wipe Mint as it suits them well apart from the low volume. Thanks all.

Install the pulse audio volume controller, pavucontrol. For some reason it does not come with the default pulse audio installation.

You can set volume per playback client. As I recall, when I used mplayer, it came up at 50% volume, even though system volume was 100%. That was too low for me.

It is nice to be able to set volume per client. For example vlc was always too loud for me. Now I can throttle back vlc and throttle up mplayer.
