psyBNC and irssi problems

Hey guys, i'm new to linux just to warn you. Ok, i installed irssi, i connected to my bnc perfectly fine, but when i try to type in any of my channels it says "Irssi: Not Connected to Server" even though it seems as though it is. there was one time when i typed something really quick after connecting and it actually went through, but i haven't been able to say anything since then. i am not getting any disconnect msg's, or anything even like that. And if I am really getting disconnected practically immediately do you guys have any ideas on a way to stop that? i'm willing to try anything, because this is driving me mad
thanks for your time.
