Angry Programs installed with package manager aren't recognised by other programs

OK, I'm really confused about this.

The problem seems to be that programs installed by package manager aren't seen by other programs - could this be something to do with environment variables?

For example, I have gstreamer and all the gstreamer plugins installed but neither banshee nor rhythmbox can find them to decode my music.

I've got Java Runtime 1.6 installed but none of my browsers can find it. Jajuk won't run either because it needs java.

I've got Qt installed but when I was doing "./configure" for something it was checking for qt: no; it couldn't find it and gave an error.

I'm a bit of a newbie so any help you can give me would be muchly appreciated!

Thanks, Fraser

Multiple problems here. First it looks like you are mixing repos. Where ever you get your apps from (banshee, rhythmbox) you have to get the plugins too (usually a naming issue).

When you compile things you need the -devel version of the dependency(Qt-devel).

You may not have installed java correctly/completely. Try: which java

Thanks for your reply

When I try to remove the gstreamer plugins using package manager, it says...
Removing for dependencies:
banshee-0.10.12-4.fc6
compiz-0.3.6-2.fc6
control-center-2.16.3-11.fc6
gaim-2.0.0-0.31.beta6.fc6
gnome-applets-2.16.0.1-12.fc6
gnome-media-2.16.1-2.fc6
gnome-session-2.16.3-1.fc6
gnome-volume-manager-2.15.0-4.fc6
gnonlin-0.10.7-0.gst.1.6
gstreamer-ffmpeg-0.10.2-2.lvn6
gstreamer-pitfdll-0.9.1.1-1.fc6
gstreamer-plugins-bad-0.10.4-0.gst.1.6
gstreamer-plugins-base-0.10.12-0.gst.1.6
gstreamer-plugins-good-0.10.4-3.fc6
gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0.10.5-1.lvn6
gstreamer-python-0.10.7-2.fc6
orca-1.0.1-1.fc6
rhythmbox-0.9.8-2.fc6
sound-juicer-2.16.3-1.fc6
soundconverter-0.9.4-1.fc6
totem-2.16.5-1.fc6
totem-mozplugin-2.16.5-1.fc6

so it's gonna remove all that stuff! How do I know which repo the plugins come from? Or... if I uninstall the plugins and reinstall from source would that solve the problem?

Installing from source will probably make the situation much worse.

I can see that you are using livna (.lvn6) and gstreamer (.gst). Livna (in FC5+) works very well with the core and extra repos (the standard repos). I do not use .gst so I do not know. As a guess, repo mixing would not appear to be the problem in this case. What type of music files are you having trouble with?

Edit

Here are some instructions:http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_cor...es.html#Codecs

The link to the codecs is old, so use this one instead. ftp://ftp1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/rele...061022.tar.bz2
