Program to recover lost Windows product key

I am repairing an unbootable Windows XP installation for a client, and after repairing using their installation disk I found that the product key needed to be re-entered. I saved the contents of the entire hard drive to my computer as a backup, just in case such a situation should arrive. Windows having been previously unbootable, and now only in a folder on my harddrive, I need to know what file the activation code was stored in, and a program to access it. Thanks!

Google for "Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder". It can read the key directly from the registry files on the harddrive.

Is there a Linux version? I run Fedora 16 64-bit. An .exe will be of no use to me.

You might try the site below which explains using UBCD4wind CD to recover the Product ID. Never used it myself so don't know how well it works.

But also don't forget that Windows now "phones home." There are plenty of compelling, legitimate reasons to want to have a separately bootable Windows installation drawn from a typical OEM version that was distributed only on the computer itself. But don't expect it to work for illegitimate ones... Just sayin'.

Well, none of these helped me. But, my client did manage to find their activation code. However, it would be nice to know for everyone in general in the future. A program that will find the product key out of the unbooted files of a Windows OS where the files are stored in a folder on a Linux system.

There is no substitute for a PE disk unless you have time to spare.
