What do you mean by model?

Is METAOBJ what you have in mind? It is short for METAPOST Objects. You define each object and then define the tree.

There is also pstricks' pstree.

The METAOBJ package is described in section 3.5 of The Latex Graphics Companion (2nd Ed).
PSTricks' pst-tree is in section 366 of the same book.

The sample code from this book is available in the texlive-latex-doc-2008-13.14.1.noarch linux package. If you don't have this available for Ubuntu, I know that it available for openSuSE. It is a noarch package that installs documentation. You could extract the contents of the rpm package with "unrpm" or from the "mc" (midnight commander) file manager.

I found this manual:
Drawing Graphs in MetaPost
