Program to create videos from desktop and save as flv

I want to make a few training videos of how to use certain programs on Linux Mint. What program would you recommend to select a region of my desktop, record it, and output it as a flash video flv?
Don't need anything fancy with effects or anything, just real basic but easy to use.

I have used recordmydesktop a couple of times. It was a few years ago, but it worked quite nicely.

I think the biggest hurdle you will face is turning the videos into *.flv files. There is little love for Flash in the open source community. Most recorders I've seen do not "save as" Flash, though I've never used simplescreenrecorder.

However, according this thread at StackOverflow, you can use ffmpeg to convert other formats to *.flv. You may also be able to use mencoder for such a conversion.

I have not tested this.

Is there some compelling reason for using *.flv as opposed to other formats?

I don't see simplescreenrecorder in the software manager in Linux mint. Starting to hate Linux mint because of the lack of things, and current versions, in their software manager haha

Frank, no real compelling reason, other than I knew all the people who would watch the videos could play that format.

Another screen recorder you can check if mint has is called vokoscreen recorder. It's simple and intuitive to use. It uses ffmpeg in the backend.

However, it records videos to either mpeg4 or x264 using an avi or mkv container respectively. You can simply convert the mkv/avi video to flv with ffmpeg afterwards.

If you can't find a GUI screen recorder that outputs to flv, you can simply use ffmpeg to screen capture the desktop to a flv video format.

Here's a tip.
Launch vokoscreen from a terminal. Do a test run of recording your desktop. From the terminal you launched vokoscreen. You can see the backend ffmpeg command syntax it is using to capture the desktop. Copy that code and modify it to output to a flv video.

# simplescreenrecorder
in terminal:
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:maarten-baert/simplescreenrecorder
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install simplescreenrecorder
then look for simple in the global menu somewhere.

It's available as a .deb package here:
http://www.getdeb.net/app/SimpleScreenRecorder

Or if you want to install from source:
https://github.com/MaartenBaert/ssr/.../master.tar.gz

And on github:

Thanks guys. Will try simple out the next time I need to make some.
Gave recordmydesktop a try, seemed to work pretty well, although trying to draw the region I wanted on that tiny thumbnail of my desktop was painful, took me 10 tries before I actually got the area exactly the way I wanted it. I'm guessing there's a better way but I couldn't figure it out.
