Program to convert videoformats?

I bought a Playstation 3 and love it! I'm planning to install a linux on it now and this may sound a wee bit crazy but I'd love to convert some of the divx movies I have on my computer to h.264 or mpeg-4 to be able to play them direcctly through XMB.

avidemux can do that.
If you don't need a gui then I'd recommend to use mencoder directly.

Thanks for reply! Now I just need to get some decent USB keyboard and trackball. Compact and black, all of them. :P
