program that lets me write on the desktop itself?

I would be interested in writing my to-do list, or other notes, on the desktop itself, preferably without having a window open (that would be the point, even) but AFAIK, the only way to do that is to to draw the notes using a graphics program, save the file, and use it as wallpaper. That seems awkward and inconvenient if the notes are going to change often. Anyway, does anyone know of such a program?

For what it's worth, even if it's probably not what you are looking for, there are little apps that simulate postits. You can cover your desktop with little yellow squares with things to do.

I never heard of an application that allows you to write on the desktop. I personally leave mine clean of files, icons, ... and use a todo list on my mail client.
