Program parameters

In my Gnome menu, most programs are launched by a command followed by a parameter such as %c or %i. I've searched the web and books on Unix for an explanation of what each does, to no avail. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The menu launches OpenOffice Writer with %U; when I made a keyboard shortcut, I left the %U out and I can't tell the difference! What am I missing here?

I just found this:
http://standards.freedesktop.org/des...pec-0.9.4.html

It is not a complete answer, but is at least a start.

I tried many searches using--eg--"%u" or "%U" and got nothing. I suggest more searches using--eg-- "desktop-entry" or ".desktop"

Thanks for the reference. It's all very mysterious. Why should The Gimp be launched as

gimp %U

when the %U is supposed to be a variable containing a list of URLs? There are some things Mankind is not meant to know ...

Exec parameters are useful for a desktop launcher when you drag 'n drop one or more items (from the file manager) onto the application icon. The fact that gimp can handle URLs is that the launcher usually runs gimp-remote, which tells gimp to open a local or remote image file.

Now I get it! I'd just never heard of dragging a file onto a desktop launcher. So that's why Windows users have all that stuff on their desktops. I still don't see the point of it, compared with just clicking on the file. Moreover, according to Murphy's Law, the launcher you want will always be the one under the file browser...
