program loading times

This is just a curious question for something I've noticed.

Why does it take what can seem like a long while for a program to load the first time? It always takes the longest the first time it's used but after that it will pop up almost immediately every time until the machine is rebooted. It doesn't seem to be specific to any distribution.

This isn't a gripe about anything, it doesn't bother me. I was just wondering.

i think it is because information about the program is left on the ram and it can load quicker if it is already on the ram. I find that this happend in all operating systems. even windows(error messages pop up quicker the second time)
