program for ir remote codes?

apologies for my being lazy but I want to find out the codes a remote is transmitting kind of like irw does without having to setup lircd.conf.
The thing is i have a universal remote and with for some remotes two buttons can map onto the same code. This means that i am losing the use of some buttons.
ANYWAY long story short, is there a program like irw which can show me the codes the remote is transmitting without my needing to set up the lircd.conf file each time?

ircat will read the direct codes instead of running lircd

irrecord will record the codes to a text file. The program itself requires that lircd isn't running.
