proftpd slow with xinetd, but fast with standalone?
Hi,
I am running proftpd for quite some time now, and I am pretty happy with it.
However, I always had problems with slow logins...
This was due to reverse DNS lookup, and Identlookup, according to the different sites i found... So, i disabled these options. Didn't change a bit.
So, I was still looking for an answer, and by accident I discovered, that when I run proftp in standalone mode, instead of xinetd, it works without any logindelays...
So, I assume xinetd is the cause of the delay, but I didn't find anything about this on the net....
So I put my hope on you (again...)
I have a file called proftpd in the /etc/xinetd.d with this settings in it:
service ftp
{
disable = no
flags= REUSE
socket_type = stream
wait = no
user = root
server = /usr/sbin/proftpd
log_on_success += DURATION USERID
log_on_failure += USERID
nice = 10
}
Eventually there is a login coming up, but it takes a long time.
Anyone has ideas why xinetd takes so long to start the proftpd?
Strange thing however is, that when I open an ftp session I almost directly see the proftp-banner, but then it takes about 10 to 20 seconds before a login-prompt is shown. Also in the log-file, I see that the first message that proftpd started, shows up at the same time that a login-prompt is shown...
Last thing to mention: This only happens when I logon from outside my lan. But why does it respond and give a login immediately when in standalone mode (also from outside my lan?)
I am running on RH 7.3, behind a firewall, that is configured correctly ( I can use FTP from outside the lan, but login is slow)
I am really confused here, so anyone with suggestions is welcome!! (Very welcome!!!)

not really sure if this will fix it - add your clients to the /etc/hosts file of your ftp server or implement a local DNS.
i believe xinetd is the one causing the delay. do you have any other xinetd controlled services expriencing the login delay?
or, why not just stick with the standalone setup?

for as much as i can remeber xinetd slows the whole thing down and it restricts you running certain functions of proftp wich can only be ran from standalone.
If the standalone works fine for you why even this post ? just use the standalone and all your worries are over
anyhow i'm quite new to linux myself and the only reason i installed it is to run a descent ftpserver to access my files from anywhere but i don't seem to find any good guide wich helps me step by step to get it running i've really looked all over the web, could you help me out ? i saw you are from the netherlands i'm from belgium myself could you mail me ? oink@mail.be i wanted to mail you but you have your adress hidden
thx in advance

Born4Linux: I (seem to) run several xinetd services. I did not notice any delays on it, but I could be wrong.
i run a local DNS server, so that doesn't seem to be the prob either.
I run it in standalone mode now, however, i wanted to know why it ran so slow with xinetd....
guc: for a good ftp server, I would gladly help you. However, to do this by email, i don't believe it's fair to the users of this forum, who might want to do the same. Still, if you want to, i can help you with it. Lets just do it in this forum. If however, you don't feel comfortable sending configuration on this forum, Im happy to drop you an email. Just let me know. There are several servers for this, but as you might have understood already: i prefer proftpd....
I already helped some people with setting up an FTP server with proFTPd on this forum,, take a look at this thread
and this one
Sorry, forgot one link: there is a complete proftpd howto on this forum:
Just click here
Let me (us on the LQ-forum) know...
