proftpd - problem changing port.

Hello,

Got me a small problem with proftpd.
It's already installed and working on my slackware 10 box but the problem is: I cannot change the port it should be listening too. I have to change it from 21 to something bigger than 1024 because my provider blocks anything that serves (from its customers) below this. (not kidding, ask other Telenet Belgium users)

I found the /etc/proftpd.conf file and changed the port from 21 to 8821 but I still cannot connect after a reboot of the pc. I cannot connect from anywhere, not even from my inside network. (which used to work with port 21) => It keeps listining to 21.... (that keeps working)

Now I'm not running this as a standalone server but as a part of the inetd. => Do I have to change the config to "standalone" server type?

thanks.

If you're using inetd to launch proftpd you don't have to restart.
There are few things that require a restart after making the change.

if you've made a change to inetd.conf, restart it (/etc/rc.d/rc.inetd restart), but if it's just the config file, you should be fine.

Try "netstat -l" to see what services are listening. FTP should be listed and that should also tell you which port it's listening on.
If it's not, check inetd again.
Let us know what netstat says though..

ftp is certainly running.
It's still listening to port 21 altough the conf file says it should be 8821.

I can connect to it from my other pc:
* via filezilla, ftp cnx works to port 21 (also sftp works fine to port 8822)
* I can telnet to the port 21 but not 8821:
Microsoft Telnet> open 192.168.2.2 8821
Connecting To 192.168.2.2...Could not open connection to the host, on port 8821:
Connect failed

from the netstat -l:
...
tcp 0 0 *:ftp *:* LISTEN
...
=> because it says ftp instead of a port number, I'm pretty sure it's listening to 21.

thanks.
